IBM Share, CA’s Mainframe 2.0

ADC Austin Tech just finished a successful exposition at the IBM Share conference, with partner Semantic Designs. SHARE’s first conference of 2009 took place March 1-6 and drew more than 1,400 enterprise IT professionals to the Live Music Capital of the World - Austin, Texas, for nearly a full week of education and networking. Located at the Austin Convention Center, SHARE provided not one, but three keynote speakers during the conference, including Miles O’Brien, Karl Freund and Paul Borrel.

For a wrap up summary of the Share conference, please click here.

At the event, ADC Austin Tech was supporting CA’s Mainframe 2.0 initiative, with many discussions and demos of CA Repository meta-data management software for zOS and Distributed. There seems to be a growing interest in managing software assets using tools like CA Repository and SDSourceScanners (a tool to load OO and convention software into CA Repository). The ROI around managing software assets can be compelling - one study showed that 30% of an analyst’s hour is spent simply finding the right software files to analyze.

Here are some photos of the event.

TDWI Event Wrap Up

We had a successful TDWI event in Las Vegas. During this event, ADC Austin Tech presented CA Repository technology at the CA Booth.

CA Repository Station

CA Repository Station

There was a lot of interest generated from the attendees, both in Repository and in Erwin. Since Erwin data models models can be imported directly into CA Repository, these products make a lot of sense as a tandem. Enterprise Architects use these products to model enterprise data and software architectures.

ADC Austin Tech will be exhibiting with CA at the TDWI World Conference 2009 in Las Vegas Nevada, February 22-29. Join us there for a week of in-depth Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing courses presented by the industry’s premier educational institute – TDWI. Attendees with have access to several full- and half-day Business Intelligence/Data Warehousing courses covering a wide range of topics.

TDWI Las Vegas 2009

ADC Austin will be presenting CA Repository and SDSourceScanning technology, showing how CA Repository and CA Erwin can bring ROI to organizations through the use of enterprise software and database metadata.

For those of you not familiar with TDWI, TDWI (The Data Warehousing Institute™) provides education, training, certification, news, and research for executives and information technology (IT) professionals worldwide. Founded in 1995, TDWI is the premier educational institute for business intelligence and data warehousing.

We look forward to seeing the CA Repository customers and other folks interested in discussing enterprise metadata. If you have any questions on the event, please drop us a note to info@adcaustintech.com.

ROI from Source Code Scanners

It seems inherently obvious that if there is an ROI from maintaining a repository, then there must be a significant ROI derived from adding your application software portfolio to the repository. There is time and money saved from enhanced impact analysis, reuse of software components, higher quality releases, etc.  But how do we quantify the this? The ROI can come from several tangible and intangible factors.

As a starting place I have attached an updated CA Repository ROI Calculator on CA Repository ROI, updated to use ComputerWorld 2008 salary information. However, this analysis gives short shrift to the role of software assets into repository ROI.

There are many ways that software can play a role:

  • Removing redundant code (clones) that sap maintenance dollars
  • Dramatically shortening software architectural analysis tasks
  • Reducing the number of defects that reach production systems

Webcast - CA Repository XML/Java Source Scanning

21 Jan 2009
12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. EST

As companies have a need to merge data from disparate systems from across their IT enterprises, the need for managing source code objects based on OO-based languages such as Java combined with a number of additional data sources is more relevant than ever.

This webcast session will discuss and demonstrate how this can be accomplished in both CA Repository solutions through using the upcoming Universal XML Exchange which will be available in the next CA Repository product releases (both distributed and mainframe).

ADC Austin Tech and Semantic Designs are CA partners with high expertise in enterprise level, model-driven technologies who can offer solutions for bringing source code into the CA Repository so that it can be part of your organization’s overall metadata management solution.

CA World 2008 in the can

CA World 2008 is history. Lots of intense work, study, and fun involved.

ADC Austin and Semantic Designs presented our new SDSourceScanners (Java) for CA Repository. We have been intensely involved XML exchange beta program over the past 6 months, so it was great to finally get feedback from actual customers, and from the CA technical staff. I hope that if anyone reading this blog has ideas, please send them our way.

In case you missed our presentations, here they are:

We are certainly looking forward to the v2.3 release, and getting XML exchange into the CA Repository community.

Best,

John Rhodes
